Wilson A. Bentley with camera

The first photographs of snowflakes

This is Wilson A. Bentley, self-educated farmer from Jericho, Vermont, photographer and lifelong lover of snow.  Bentley spent over a year experimenting with different ways of taking photographs through a microscope, becoming the first person to successfully photograph a single crystal of snow in 1885.  Bentley photographed more than 5,000 snowflakes in his lifetime, coming to the conclusion that all snowflakes are unique.
"Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty; and it seemed a shame that this beauty should not be seen and appreciated by others," Bentley stated.  "Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated. When a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost. Just that much beauty was gone, without leaving any record behind."
Here are some of the photographs from Bentley's collection:Keep Reading

Snow Shoveling Life Hack

Live in a state (or country) where it snows heavily?  Luckily I don't, I get beautiful weather all year long.  In fact, it's 80 degrees right now.  Yeah, be jealous New England and Midwest America.  If you do happen to live in a region where it snows heavily, check out this awesome life hack by Joshua Jordan.  He's also an illusionist/magician, so there may be some dark forces at work here.  Hopefully this will help some of you not kill yourselves this winter.
