With The Last Jedi about a month away from release, director Rian Johnson already announced big news for his future in Star Wars. When Colin Trevorrow left the untitled Star Wars: Episode IX director's seat, fans wondered if The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would step in for another round of directing. That's not what happened, but we now know it's because he will be working on three new Star Wars films!
The news was announced by Bog Iger, CEO of Disney, during a conference call discussing Disney's fiscal year of 2017. A filming commencement date is unknown, but we can bet that it will be sometime after the current trilogy is fully released, and possibly the third standalone Star Wars film after Episode IX.
The new trilogy will be separate from the Skywalker Saga of the prequel, original, and sequel trilogies and will "introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored." Here's the official statement from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy:
"We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He's a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.
Rian Johnson himself followed up with a quick comment on Twitter acknowledging the news:
Obviously I hope you like The Last Jedi. But man now I REALLY hope you like The Last Jedi.— Rian Johnson (@rianjohnson) November 9, 2017
In addition to the new trilogy of movies, Iger also confirmed that a live-action Star Wars TV series is currently being developed by Disney and will premiere exclusively through Disney's upcoming streaming service, set to launch in 2019.
I've been waiting a long time for confirmation of the live-action TV series as it was rumored for quite a long time now. Exciting things are coming to us in the Star Wars universe!
Let us know what you think about the idea of the new trilogy and how you think it will turn out in the comments below!
