Star Wars Episode VIII Official Teaser Trailer
New Star Wars VII teaser trailer, details, spoilers, and some possible hidden gems.Words can't even begin to describe the excitement I'm feeling right now. Lucasfilm did an amazing job keeping the details of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi under wraps up to the mind-blowing Star Wars Celebration panel that took place earlier today.
WARNING! Possible spoilers ahead. If you don't want to know any details on the upcoming Star Wars film then don't read any further!
Now that we've seen the trailer, there are quite a few things to talk about. One being the chills that went down my spine when Luke Skywalker started talking in the trailer. The cliffhanger that The Force Awakens left us where Rey and Luke had a speechless stare-off has definitely made me most anticipated for Luke's story. It seems as though he's playing more of a Yoda-like role, at least at the beginning of the trailer where it shows Rey force-training on the island with him on Ahch-To (Skellig Michael).
Rey's heavy breathing at the beginning and Luke telling her to breathe makes it appear as though she just found out a devastating truth. When Luke asks her "what do you see?", she responds with "light" and we see the back of a female figure. My theory is this is Laura Dern's character, possibly Rey's mother or at least someone she remembers from her past on or before Jakku. This could very well be Carrie Fisher, however given other shots of her on set, the outfit and hair style greatly differs. This doesn't mean it's not her, but I believe this is a new character in the universe we're going to be introduced to in later trailers.
There's a shot with Rey and Luke in the distance showing Rey training with a lightsaber next to a giant object. Speculation has shown the object being a large rock wall with Yoda standing at the top observing the training. The size of the object compared to Rey and the shape suggest that this definitely could be Yoda. If this is true, this could open up a whole new side of story possibilities. Are Yoda and Luke planning on an attack to take down the First Order somehow? Or maybe Luke has been so affected by his experience as a Jedi and the events that unrolled in his life that Yoda has to step in to train someone who is determined enough to defeat the First Order?
What appears to be a Force Tree is visible in a dark area with only a ray of light shining down. Then we see a book and a gloved hand touching the top. This may be a journal of some sort authored by Luke Skywalker during his time alone on the remote island. This could also be The Journal of the Whills, a concept dating back to early drafts of the Star Wars franchise George Lucas wanted to use to connect the galaxy far, far away to the real world.
In addition, we get to see some confrontation between the light side and the dark side, notably the battle that takes place on what appears to be another desert planet, where we also get to see the return of the Millennium Falcon!
Luke and R2-D2 are then seen standing some distance away from a large burning building on what I'm assuming to be the original Jedi temple from previously stated theories. It's possible that this part, where they show Kylo Ren pointing his lightsaber, and where they show Captain Phasma leading some stormtroopers across a field of fire, are part of Rey's vision from The Force Awakens. I definitely believe that at least part of what she saw in her vision was part of this scene. Other theories have stated that Captain Phasma emerges with the stormtroopers after the explosion of Poe Dameron's X-Wing.
The end of the trailer where Luke says "it's time for the Jedi to end" was the perfect line to leave Star Wars fans wanting more. I really hope this is foreshadowing the events that took place before The Force Awakens where Luke was teaching a new group of Jedi. The Force Awakens gave us a glimpse into the story but definitely left it wide open for interpretation and wonder.
With that said, it's clear that Luke Skywalker is broken. He's lost Obi-Wan Kenobi, his father, Han Solo, there's clearly a dark history between him and Kylo Ren, and the First Order has risen with a new leader, who we still know really nothing about. Everything that he had fought for has been left in darkness.
Also, I have to say, the movie poster for The Last Jedi is incredible:
This poster symbolizes the conflict between Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren that's been going on for quite some time and puts out a feeling of some type of fate that's coming for one of them in this next chapter. It almost appears as though Rey will be the center of the conflict and will have to make a choice between the light side or the dark side. She's holding a blue lightsaber that fades to red, possibly indicating the inner conflict of choosing a side or being tempted by the dark side.
Either way, we're still a long way off from a full-length trailer and, of course, the movie's release, but this definitely fueled the fire for myself and many other Star Wars fans. I'm hoping we'll get to see more in the upcoming San Diego Comic Con, but nothing has been reported yet.
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi will be released in theaters on December 15, 2017.
