Are these clues of Luke Skywalker's turn to the Dark Side or classic misdirections in editing and merchandising? It all began with a single question from Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, to J.J. Abrams, Director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens: "Who is Luke Skywalker?"
Even after the first of three movies in the latest Star Wars trilogy, a teaser trailer, and a full-length trailer for the next-in-line film Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we don't know much about Luke's character since the events of Return of the Jedi. A lot has happened since we last saw him in action over 30 years ago, but we at least have a few pieces to put together.
Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy
As confirmed by Han Solo in The Force Awakens, Luke was training a new group of Jedi when one of his students turned on him. Undoubtedly, this is Kylo Ren and (possibly) the other Knights of Ren who may have also turned. What we saw in The Force Awakens was Kylo Ren as the villain searching for Luke Skywalker to destroy him and Luke hiding in an unknown location. Since we knew nothing of his whereabouts or his character development over the last several decades, we assumed what we knew of him: That he was a good guy.
It was hard to tell what kind of character Luke had become in The Force Awakens due to obvious reasons:
Luke Skywalker: Friend or Foe?
Fast forward to now, and we're getting mixed signals from all sorts of directions. The first example is the official movie poster for The Last Jedi. In all previous Star Wars films, the movie posters illustrated the main antagonist near the center, in the background, and much larger than the rest of the characters. The Last Jedi's movie poster shows Luke in this position in the same style. Is this a clue towards his true intentions in the upcoming film or another misdirection leading us to believe that he's turning to the Dark Side?
Another example is IMAX's new light and dark side images at their select theaters. Luke is seen on both displays and as a looming, shadowy figure on the Dark Side display.
There are also some parts in the official "The Last Jedi" trailer that may suggest Luke has turned or will turn during this film. Like where we see a more menacing Luke hovering over Rey emerging from a pool of water.
So is Luke turning to the dark side or not?
Honestly? Who knows? Disney has done a great job of keeping the overall story in the dark and throwing out mixed signals about the characters, namely Luke, Rey, and Kylo Ren.
The good news is we're less than two months away from finding out what happens and I couldn't be more stoked!
What are your thoughts on Luke Skywalker's turn to the Dark Side? Do you think it's going to happen or that it's even a possibility?
Mark Hamill confirms that Luke Skywalker is NOT turning to the Dark Side.
