Who is Supreme Leader Snoke? What we know so far.

Supreme Leader Snoke hologram The Force Awakens

One movie into the new trilogy and a teaser and full-length trailer for The Last Jedi and we're still left in the dark on who exactly Snoke is.

Well, at least for now. Andy Serkis confirmed in an interview with IGN on October 13th regarding Snoke's backstory: "Oh yeah, absolutely I know it." This seems to be a revision of Rian Johnson's statement to Empire on September 5th: "I wasn't interested in explaining where he [Snoke] came from or telling his history, except where it serves this story."

From the sounds of the two comments, we may not learn Snoke's full backstory in The Last Jedi, or anything at all! There have been tons of speculation and theories from fans regarding Snoke's backstory including him being the reincarnation of Darth Vader or even Jar Jar Binks. If the latter is true (which I'm 99.999999% sure it's not), Disney corporate offices and theme parks would be burned down by furious fans in a day.

Snoke is Jar Jar Binks

So what do we know about Snoke so far?

Pretty much nothing, other than the fact that he has a grudge against The Resistance and Luke Skywalker and wants to eliminate them entirely. In the latest The Last Jedi trailer, we learned that he eventually ends up capturing Rey and holding her hostage. Near the end of the trailer she is seen floating in mid-air, Snoke holding her captive across the room saying "Fulfill your destiny." While this trailer is cryptic and most definitely misdirecting to obtain its secrecy and refrain from any possible spoilers, we know that we'll at least get to see some action with him.

Snoke reaching out hand

According to The Star Wars Wiki Snoke has been around a long time, possibly dating back to events from the prequel trilogy. If this is true, what if Emperor Palpatine wasn't the assigned leader of the Empire after all? What about Rey's past? It's possible he had some involvement in the Battle of Jakku shortly after the destruction of the second Death Star and the Battle of Endor and is part of the reason why Rey was left behind there.

At the beginning of the trailer, I speculated that Snoke was talking to Rey, not Kylo Ren when he said: "When I found you I saw raw, untamed power and beyond that something truly special." A few shots of Kylo Ren are shown during his statement and then a quick shot of Rey igniting a lightsaber at the end. Again, a lot of misdirection in the trailer, and done so on purpose, so it's possible Snoke was talking to Kylo Ren or even someone else. But if this is true, Rey's parents, past, and future could be linked to the Dark Side increasing her temptation to switch over.

I even believe that Kylo Ren and Rey will somehow switch places, Ren moving to the Light Side and Rey to the Dark Side.

Either way, Disney's going to have to do something that will surprise everyone. The Force Awakens received a lot of backlash about how it was a rewrite of A New Hope. Since there was such a large gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, I think they had to add a lot of similarities to draw its fans to the original story. But I also believe that we are in for a few surprises and directions in the story.

What do you think Snoke's backstory is? Do you think he's linked to Rey or had some part in the Empire before its fall? Let me know in the comments. I'm curious to see what you all think about my theories and yours.
