Giant 2,000-pound pumpkin takes top prize
Gary Miller of Napa, California, won the 40th Annual Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off with a giant pumpkin weighing in at 1,985 pounds. Miller took home a cash prize of $11,910, about $6.00 per pound.
The winner of the first contest back in 1974 only weighed 132 pounds. The record for largest pumpkin was won at the Topsfield Fair in Topsfield, Massachusetts in September, 2012, weighing in at 2,009 pounds. The World Championship offered a "mega-prize" of $25,000 to anyone that could beat the all-time record.
On their best days, giant pumpkins can gain as much as 25-30 pounds per day.
