Game of Thrones Duo to Create Series of Star Wars Films

Disney announced a few months ago that Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi, would be creating his own Star Wars movies soon. Today, Disney announced that the creators of Game of Thrones will also be creating a new series of Star Wars films.

It's no secret that Disney is excited about making as many Star Wars movies as possible, with the Skywalker's sequel trilogy, Rogue One, and Solo under its belt already, and now a trilogy by Rian Johnson and another trilogy by the creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.

Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, recently stated:

"David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."

Like Rian Johnson's upcoming trilogy, the new films will be distinct from the traditional saga films, but details about both are being kept quiet for now. Johnson confirmed that his trilogy would not focus on the Old Republic, but would be a completely new, untold story, but it's possible that the trilogy announced today could center around that timeframe in the Star Wars universe. There's so much going on right now with The Last Jedi just being released not even two months ago in theaters and Solo right around the corner that it's likely we won't hear anything for quite some time.

News of Benioff's and Weiss' post-Game of Thrones plans also surfaced, confirming they're currently in works writing and developing a new HBO project called Confederate, centered around the idea of the South winning the American Civil War and slavery ongoing. The project came quickly under fire with HBO defending it stating: "We recognize the sensitivity of this project and will treat it with the respect that it deserves."

Whether or not that project will continue may also reveal the timeline of their upcoming Star Wars films. As always, only time will tell, but we'll keep you posted on any further developments.

What do you think of having yet another set of Star Wars films coming out? Are you excited that Disney keeps pumping them out or do you think they're [green] milking it for all it's worth? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
